Your first sneakers?
I don't know if they were my first sneakers e-v-e-r, but these were the first pair I really, really wanted and made an effort in the art of persuasion a mam to buy them for me, we didn't get much new clothes when we grew up. I don't know why I wanted them, but I'll always remember my Stan Smith Adidas, always wearing them. They kind of look funny or, they looked funny on me I guess, I was kind of a geek and tall for my age, this was when I was maybe ten or twelve or whatever. Tall and skinny and not even teenager and those flat, white and green Stan Smith. I suppose I could sell them now here in LA, and get a good price, but I don't know where they are, hiding somewhere in a nice Swedish suburb. They better rest in peace y'all.

Do you love sneakers or what?
I a-l-w-a-y-s wear sneakers, to my two sisters big frustration. They're not down with the idea that you can wear sneakers to a skirt or a dress as well as to a pair of jeans. If I'm really depressed I get my hair cut, have a new tattoo done or buy a pair of sneakers. This week I bought two pairs of Fila. One all-white pair, too small, and a pair of black ones, too big, don't ask me why, big confusion. I like wearing my sneakers big though, but my one sister and her friend, who lives in New York and right now mostly wears her white and blue Nikes, think that sneakers on girls should be as small as they can be. They're both kind of girlie-girlie so I guess it depends on what type of woman you are. I'm very feminine but you know, wouldn't wear pink lipstick at no time. I think a very short skirt and a pair of very big Nikes is all good.

Mr.Hill is obviously very popular in Silverlake.

What do cool people in your neighbourhood wear?
Right now Fila. It's almost only Fila, Fila, Fila. Especially the new Fila Grant Hill with, if you like look at them from the side they have a blue or red triangle that forms the shoe. Sounds complicated but that's what they look like. I don't really like them, to be honest, though I like Fila a lot, but maybe it's because so many people have them right now, you get tired of seeing them.
And then, where I live, in Silver Lake kind of close to Echo Park in Los Angeles, a lot of people of course wear the classic Nike Cortez in all kinds of shapes, because we have a lot of cholos around here. But like I already said, I think this spring Fila have really taken over. Right before that, this winter, it's been really cool among people who like to call themselves "hip" to have the Nikes that look like starships, you know, r-e-a-l-l-y hi-tech, you expect to see Captain Spock looking out from your left laces.

A good place to buy sneakers in your hood?
Well, it's not in my hood. You should go down to South Central, to some of the swapmeets where they have way more models than at the big expensive department stores up in Hollywood. It's also cheaper as soon as you get out of Trenchtown. If not a swapmeet, I know a good warehouse for shoes at 4330 Crenshaw Boulevard, real close to Leimert Park in South Central. Cheap and a large selection.
